Understanding life diamonds, traceability, and what to look for when making a purchase.

What is a Life Diamond?

A life diamond is a laboratory-grown diamond created from biological carbon sources — such as human hair, pet fur, or plant material. The organic material is processed to extract carbon, which is then used as the starting material for diamond synthesis via High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) methods.

Life diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same chemical composition (pure carbon crystal), physical properties, and optical characteristics as mined diamonds. The only difference is their origin: one comes from the earth, the other from a laboratory using carbon from a specific biological source.

Why Traceability Matters

When you purchase a life diamond, you are paying for a specific story: that this diamond was created from carbon associated with a person, pet, or meaningful source. Without independent verification, this claim cannot be trusted.

ILDA-certified laboratories maintain documented chain-of-custody records from source collection through diamond synthesis. This documentation is audited by ILDA's independent Technical Committee, ensuring that the traceability claims are legitimate.

What to Look For

1. ILDA Certification

Ensure the laboratory is listed in the ILDA Member Directory and authorized to issue certificates. Ask for the certificate number and verify it on our verification portal.

2. Complete Documentation

A legitimate life diamond should come with: (a) ILDA traceability certificate, (b) diamond grading report (e.g., IGI), (c) source collection documentation, and (d) chain-of-custody records.

3. Transparent Process

The laboratory should explain their process clearly: how the carbon is extracted, how the diamond is grown, and what quality control measures are in place. Avoid laboratories that are vague or secretive about their methods.
